Outer Wilds – Review. Get there in 20 minutes..

, Wanting to show my creativity to the world, I couldn’t (although maybe I should have) bypassed such a platform as SG. To be honest, it took me a long time to decide on this step. Deciding to see what the requirements, policies and, in general, what the community’s attitude was towards the newcomers, I plunged headlong into all the scandals, intrigues, investigations (hello March 2018) and my hands began to tremble. But in the harsh world of competition, only those who take a risky step survive, and by publishing a video here, I sincerely hope for help and criticism of my creations from ordinary users and game blogging gurus, because living in hothouse conditions, where no one except friends leaves feedback, like an author, a person will not be able to develop. I will quote one person who was previously influential on this resource

Rough? Well, what can I do, alas, this is true and I need stopgame, so I’ll make an effort to fulfill it formal requirements, but the human factor will remain with people 🙂

All quotes are in no way intended to spoil the reputation of the site and are in no way an attempt to offend the management in any way. These are just quotes from the chronicles of the site, which in a sense concern me, as a no-name newbie posting his unnecessary videos

The character sits by the fire eating marshmallows one after another, in front of his relative playing the banjo, and music from the stalker plays in the background. Then comes the name of the game

Salute to all those who, looking at the sky, dream of visiting other planets, I am with you, your budget Shepard nicknamed Animanser, and today we will look at a fresh project from Mobius Digital called Outer Wilds.

Outer Wilds is an indie open-world action-adventure game. Another temporary exclusive for the Epic Game Store. In the game, the character finds himself on the planet Kamelok just 20 minutes before the local sun undergoes a supernova explosion and destroys the entire solar system. The player has to constantly repeat this 20-minute cycle, along the way learning new details that can help stop the premature fading of the Sun. The game was released on May 30, 2019 for Microsoft Windows and Xbox One.

The player is given the opportunity to plunge into the history of a representative of the young race of Kamelians, who have just begun to conquer space and reveal its secrets. Our hero is one of the few who have completed preparatory courses and joined the “Conquerors of Wild Space” program, the main goal of which is to collect as much data as possible about other planets and, if possible, find ancient artifacts and records left by the extinct civilization of Naomi. The game starts from the day of our character’s first flight. While exploring the village in search of launch codes, along the way becoming familiar with the basic controls and mechanics of the game, the character encounters one of Naomi’s artifacts, which pulls him into a time loop. From this moment the story of Outer Wilds begins. The plot itself is narrated in the form of a kind of novella in the detective genre, where the player’s main task is to travel to different planets in search of new clues that will help shed light on what really happened to the extinct, advanced race of Naomi. However, on the way to the solution, you will encounter traps left by the previously mentioned Naomi, harsh and individual climatic conditions for each planet, and the most dangerous enemy – time. The player will be given only 20 minutes of game time before the local Sun goes out, taking away life in the entire solar system, but thanks to the time loop, the character will constantly return to the beginning of the day, thereby continuing to find the missing puzzles, gradually discovering more and more unexpected plot twists.

To explore space, the player has at his disposal: Not the most durable spaceship, a reconnaissance probe that can take photographs at 360 degrees and display life-threatening anomalies for the character, a detector of various signals, an auto translator, a flight log and, of course, a spacesuit with a jet pack on the back. You should not expect from the game any skirmishes with extraterrestrial beings, mining of minerals for research or construction of any base, the game simply does not have all this, and it is not necessary. The entire gaming experience is based purely on exploring planets, looking for clues and reading Naomi’s notes. Boring? Don’t rush to conclusions. The game has simply excellent game design, all the planets are unique and have their own characteristic features, and the number of details and objects make you spend more than a dozen minutes, making the player want to explore everything. Also, despite the fact that the game does not have random world generation, it is not monotonous. The game has a different series of events that are activated depending on the number of cycles completed. For example, in the game there is a parade of planets, when the planets become so close to each other that sand from one planet covers another, making the surface of the latter unsuitable for research, or after a certain time a certain comet called “Stranger” may appear in the system, keeping certain mysteries on itself. In addition to Naomi’s artifacts and notes, the character will meet his other relatives who, like him, explore various corners of the system, and they, in turn, will share their knowledge and secrets discovered during the study of the planet. The only thing that can cause some discomfort is the controls. If you decide to plunge into the world of Outer Wilds, you will have to spend a couple of hours learning how to control a spaceship and, most importantly, understand the physics of the game during zero gravity on the planets, because controlling a jet pack is no easier than controlling a ship. By the way, despite the absence of obvious opponents. The character can still die by crashing into a wall at high speed, having a hole in his suit on cactus needles, or simply being deprived of oxygen.

Alpha build, everything looks so crap

Graphics
The game has wonderful graphics, but its limits are limited by the Unity engine on which it was actually made. The picture is pleasant, not soapy, light and shadows are well conveyed. All these elements create beautiful landscapes that make the player believe that he is in space. However, there are errors with optimization, which manifest themselves in a sharp drop in frames in certain moments that are completely incomprehensible to me, but otherwise, most games on Unity are guilty of this.

Music
The developers also paid attention to the musical accompaniment. Each planet has its own unique composition, but this is not limited to. In addition to the planets, places that are particularly important to the plot also have their own soundtrack; the game does not burden you with a large number of instruments playing simultaneously, and all the music in most cases comes down to one or two instruments, playing either calm or even slightly mysterious music during exploration, or an alarming motif during some dynamic event.

Bottom line
Of course, Outer Wilds is far from such giants as Mass Effect and No man’s sky, but the game can easily attract the attention of fans of exploring outer space and entice its explorers with an interesting plot, beautiful locations and pleasant music. The game, despite a certain paucity of game mechanics, will give its customers a unique experience. A game of this kind should be released with support for virtual reality, which, combined with the graphics component and gameplay, would immerse the player headlong into the world of the game. Since I don’t deal with evaluation anxiety, the game only receives from me I recommend you check it out, and you dear spectators readers, I thank you for your attention, I wish that you never forget to dream about the immensity and play only good games.
